How to choose a new barber

Men’s grooming is important, and we appreciate that choosing a new barbers can be an intimidating experience. It is important to have consistency, someone who understands your style, so you don’t have to explain what you want every time you visit. Here are our top 5 tips to help you choose a new hair stylist, and keep your barnet looking top form!

  1. Ask around

Before you even enter the shop, be sure to ask around. If you find yourself in a position where you need to find a new barbers, the first thing you should do is ask people you know for a recommendation. Furthermore, always try and pick out somebody who has a style similar to the one you’re after. Chances are they have a great barber and most guys are more than happy to provide a recommendation, especially after you’ve just offered them a complement about their hair!

  1. Check the environment

When you do go in to check out a new barbers, make sure you have a look at how clean the shop is, as well as overall organization and order. A barber with an eye for detail will make sure his shop and working area are in pristine shape. If the place looks untidy, with tools everywhere and hair all over the floor; that kind of sloppiness may end up reflected in your hair cut. Finally, the vibe of the barbers will also have an effect on your experience. Some barbers are going to feel fresh and upbeat, whilst others are going to be more relaxed.

  1. Confidence

Your barber needs to be a man that you are happy to trust with your hair, so confidence is a must. Confident barbers will look you in the eye, smile, and give you a firm handshake when you first walk in. Anything else suggests that he is not confident in his abilities. Inexperienced or bad barbers will do exactly what the client asks for, whereas a good barber will have the confidence to advise you on your chosen hair cut taking your request, face shape and hair type into account.

  1. Feedback

During the haircut, a good barber will stop and ask you for feedback, not just at the end of the haircut. They’ll let you look in a mirror and ask you your opinion on whether your hair is still too long or if you are happy with the hairline’s shape on the back of your neck. By asking for constant feedback throughout, a good barber can prevent any problems and deal with them if they arise. Bad barbers, however, will not ask you for your feedback until the very end and by then it’s too late!

  1. Get a trim

The best way of judging a new barber is to request a simple trim. This really limits the level of risk, and by the end of it you’ll know enough about the barber’s haircutting abilities and confidence to decided on whether you’ve found your new barbers.

These are our top 5; but what are your top tips for choosing a new barbers?

Choosing Your Signature Scent

Choosing your signature fragrance in this day and age can be a minefield as there is just so much choice in men’s fragrance. It is not something to be overlooked as the fragrance you settle on will represent you and reflect your personality. We have outlined a few handy tips on choosing your signature scent; all you need to bring to the table is an open mind, a willing nose and a sense of adventure!

  1. Learn the categories

Men’s fragrances can be grouped into certain categories. The traditional classification system for fragrances includes florals (which are dominated by one or more flowers), amber fragrances (which are both sweet and exotic) and woody fragrances (which are typified by sandalwood and cedar notes). That is not to say that men’s colognes are limited to these three classifications. There are other categories such as the leather family (which include honey and tobacco scents), the chypre category that are characterised by citrus tones, aquatic scents (which are clean and unisex) and green scents (which are light and typified by notes like grass or cucumber).

  1. Narrow your options

Once you have an understanding of the different categories, you will then need to develop an understanding of which scents appeal to you. Filtering out categories that do not appeal to you will really help you to find the right fragrance that also suits your personality. For example sporty types often go for citrus, green or aquatic fragrances, romantics should try a fragrance with florals and sophisticated yet mysterious types should select a musky, amber-based cologne.

  1. Try them on

It is very important to try the fragrances on as fragrance smells different on different people. This can be due to body chemistry, condition of the skin, the individual’s diet, medication, lifestyle, stress, and the environment in which we live. Furthermore, don’t try out more than three fragrances in one go and put something woolly, like a scarf, close to your nose to inhale between smells so that you cleanse your nasal palette. In the end, the fragrance that compliments your own natural body odour is not necessarily the one that you’re most attracted to right out of the bottle.

  1. Consider your lifestyle

Use your lifestyle and the city you live in to help you in your decision. This can help you figure out the intensity your fragrance should pack. If you’re in close contact with colleagues on a regular basis then you’ll want to avoid anything that they could find too overpowering. A night out calls for a stronger scent so if you are outgoing, consider a day-to-night duo or a scent that can be built upon or layered.

  1. Get a second opinion.

Finally, it is always worth getting a second opinion – particularly if you’ve got a partner that has their own opinions and preferences to add to the mix!

These are just a few helpful hints that we have to share, but what about you? How did you choose your signature scent?

Top 5 Men’s Fashion Trends Summer 2015

There is a lot more to men’s grooming than fantastic skincare. In order to feel good and look good from head to toe, make sure you are up to date with the latest summer styles! Here are the top 5 trends to look out for this spring/summer 2015.

  1. Wearing all white

White-on-white ensembles offer a minimalistic look that makes a refreshing change to bold patterns and colours that are becoming all too common in menswear. This trend even extends to men’s footwear as now all white tennis shoes are increasingly popular, especially now that muddy puddles are no longer a concern. Head-to-toe stark white can be an ambitious look, and may not work for those of you with a fairer skin tone. Off-white shades such as cream, beige and ivory are often much more doable and help to create a more elegant look.

  1. Patterns and Prints

Camouflage and floral prints can seem like a difficult fashion statement to pull off, but there is such a wide-ranging variety of pieces available in both high street and designer stores making it easier for you to get on board with this fashion trend. Camouflage is a print that is now deep-rooted within many men’s wardrobes, and this season these prints can be seen in the Spring/Summer 2015 collections from designers such as Valentino, N. Hoolywood and Mark McNairy. Floral prints are a clear example of the 1970s influence currently making its mark on menswear. Topman Design has encompassed the power of blooms, showing yellow and black daisy print shirts in their SS15 collection.

  1. Sleeveless Blazers

As the summer approaches and the weather slowly improves; it’s time to change up your wardrobe. A long sleeved shirt and blazer is often too hot for the summer months, so rather than sweltering in the heat, simply wear a waistcoat on its own and roll up your shirt sleeves! A waistcoat is the most versatile part of any three-piece suit and as the summer approaches it becomes something of a “sleeveless” blazer; it’s a perfect way to beat the heat while looking dapper.

  1. Pastels

Pastel colours are a huge fashion trend this summer as the pastel tones complement the warmer weather perfectly. If dressing head to toe in pastel seems too daunting, consider a simple pair of chinos in traditionally masculine shades such as sky blue, mint green or pale purple. These will slot seamlessly into your current wardrobe and look great paired with crisp white T-shirts and Polo’s. If you really want to embrace this trend, renowned Savile Row tailors Gieves & Hawkes, Richard James and Hardy Amies have always shown a fondness for pastel tailoring, showcasing everything from mint green to sky blue.

  1. Bomber Jackets

Bomber jackets are lightweight making them a perfect fit for the summer weather. A minimal bomber jacket is incredibly versatile as it can be used for more casual looks when coupled with a pair of distressed jeans and leather trainers, or for dressing up with a button-down, sweatshirt and cropped trousers. There are so many different options available, so if you want to make more of a statement with your jacket, you can even opt for a printed jacket and incorporate two top fashion trends in one item of clothing!

Preparing your spring/summer wardrobe for work, smart and casual looks in the unpredictable British weather is not easy. Yet equipping yourself with these five key trends gives you enough flexibility to put an outfit together that you can be sure is on trend.

Summer 2015’s Top 5 Summer Hair Trends

New season, new style; but your wardrobe isn’t the only thing that needs a makeover this summer! Now the weather is getting hot, it’s time to say farewell to the longer haired styles and top knots of spring, grab the scissors and welcome in the new season with a daring cropped look.

Side Sweep

The side sweep is one of the top hair trends that are making an appearance this summer. It is a haircut that works best on straight/slightly wavy hair and provides a sophisticated air to men’s fashion. In terms of grooming, for those of you with finer hair, it is important to make your hair look thicker by using a volumising shampoo and conditioner. And for those of you with thicker hair, ask your barber to use thinning cutting techniques. Use a matte paste to finish and a touch of hairspray if needed, and you’re good to go!

Pompadour

The pompadour is an all-time classic hairstyle. The traditional pompadour kept the length in the back and sides, but this summer 2015 brings with it a fresh new take on this look. Ask your barbers to go that one step further and show a little skin on the back and sides, take the skin fade high and tight on the sides, but connect the back up. Keep the length on the top and when styling your hair use matte clay to hold in place. A razored-in side parting will give way to the natural parting though this summer. Ask a barber to find your natural parting before starting to cut your hair. Work together to get the right parting, then ask for a number one on the sides with a clean taper. Keep the shave through the sides towards the top and a decent length on top. Finally, style with monster hold wax to keep your hair looking good all day.

Buzzcutt

For a more clean-cut style, try out a buzzcut – when it comes to summer hair trends 2015, this one is already a huge hit. Whether you trial buzzing off a bit at the bottom of your hair, or you go for the less-hair-is-more look, don’t be afraid to show off your sides. If you’re already rocking a buzzcut and you want to edge up your style, then take the leap and go for a disconnected look. It’s a bold choice with more dramatic length differences than the usual buzzcut, but all you need to pull it off is confidence. Go ahead and experiment with different lengths, layers and lines to nail the ultimate edgy summer hair trend.

Please also mention that ZV2 is ideal for bearded men as an alternative to a cream moisturiser – because it’s a spray serum it reaches the skin under the hair unlike a cream …just spray and go

Wet look

A look that has grown in popularity over the year, and one that is set to sky rocket this summer. The firm hold, high shine Uppercut Deluxe Men’s Deluxe Pomade is the perfect choice for achieving this sophisticated and sharp look, which is an eye-catching alternative to the traditional laid-back summer beach style. Try with a full head of hair or with a buzzcut – however much hair you have, get it looking wet this summer
